Box Score 2 NEW CONCORD, Ohio - The Heidelberg University softball team dropped two one-run contests to Muskingum University as they continue Ohio Athletic Conference action.
Freshman Caiti Overholt led the Student Princes offensively in the first game of their doubleheader, a 4-3 loss. Overholt went two for three at the plate, collecting one RBI and two doubles.
The Heidelberg ladies, guided by sixth year head coach Betsy Hada, took a one run lead in the second inning. Freshman Kyleah Brey plated Overholt with a single through the right side after Overholt rapped her first double of the game.
The Muskies quickly struck back with a four-run third inning. Overholt knocked her second double of the game in the Berg half of the fourth, which scored sophomore Marissa Smego and cut the Muskingum lead to 4-2.
The Muskingum starter, Ashley Gilbert, held the Berg scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings before the Student Princes composed a rally attempt. With two outs, Kaela Bryant earned a walk and was advanced to second when freshman Taylor Hicks reached on a fielding error.
Senior Jami Wagner reached on a fielder's choice to the Muskie shortstop advancing Hicks and Bryant. With the bases loaded, sophomore Lisa Simmons tacked on the Berg's third run of the game by reaching first on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. With the bases loaded again, Brey lined out to the Muskingum pitcher to end the inning and game one.
The later half of the Berg-Muskingum doubleheader was a pitchers dual. After sophomore Paige Atterholt earned the start in the first contest, freshman Erin Chapman took the mound for the Student Princes in the second game.
The young righty struck out six and threw 7.1 shutout innings. She surrendered only three hits in her first seven innings of work. In the bottom of the eighth, the Muskies rallied behind an RBI single by Amber Bova to push the Berg ladies to a 1-0 defeat, and their fourth loss of the year.
In the second game, the Student Princes were led offensively by the efforts of Hicks who went three of three at the plate. Brey and Simmons each tallied two hits in the second game but the Muskingum pitching staff and defense refused to allow a run.
The Heidelberg softball team will return to the diamond tomorrow, April 1, as they host the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace University.
First pitch between the Yellow Jackets and the Student Princes is slated for 3 p.m. from Jocko Huffman Field.
