Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Heidelberg University softball team defeat Ohio Northern in the second game of the day as they split their doubleheader with the Polar Bears.

The Student Princes dropped the first game of the day in a 5-1 contest, before the Berg ladies cruised to an 18-6 victory in five innings. The 18-6 run rule performance marks the first victory over the Polar Bears since the 2001 season.

Coincidentally, sixth year head coach Betsy Hada was a member of the 2001 squad that dealt the Polar Bears a pair of losses, 6-4 and 2-0.

The Ohio Northern starter Paige Ordean kept the Berg offense at-bay as she threw seven innings and surrendered six hits in the first game.

The Berg's lone run came in the bottom of the first on a single from freshman Kyleah Brey that scored senior Jami Wagner from third.

Freshman righty Erin Chapman pitched 2.1 innings before being replaced by sophomore Paige Atterholt. In her 2.1 innings of work, Chapman surrendered five runs on six hits. Atterholt recorded three strike outs while giving up four hits, and three walks before earning the starting nod in the second contest.

Atterholt tossed 2.2 innings, giving up six hits, five runs and three walks in the Berg victory. The sophomore earned her fourth win of the year in the 18-6 triumph over the Polar Bears.

The Berg's scoring was lead by the efforts of freshman Caiti Overholt who knocked eight RBI's with two triples and a double. After entering the first game as a pinch runner, Overholt showed off her offensive prowess in the second.

Her two RBI triple in the first extended the Berg's lead to 6-0, as she plated sophomores Marissa Smego and Kayla Zachrich. In the second inning, the Kent native rapped a two RBI double to centerfield again scoring Smego and Zachrich. Overholt's double pulled the Berg ahead, 10-2, before the Polar Bears escaped the inning.

Overholt and the Berg was far from finished offensively. Leading 11-2 in the bottom of the third, Overholt collected her second triple. The freshman plated Smego, Zachrich and Brey to extended the Berg advantage to nine, 14-5.

A sacrifice fly to right field in the fourth inning would be the final RBI for Overholt and the final run of the game for Hada's crew. With the Berg on top, 18-5, the prospect of their first run-rule victory since March of 2012 was high.

Chapman, who came on in relief for Atterholt in the third, closed out the Polar Bears in the fifth. The freshman surrendered one run on two hits before sending the Berg to their first OAC victory of the 2013-14 season.

Overholt's stellar day at the plate pushes her batting average to .316, while Zachrich's .417 marks a team-high. Wagner collected two stolen bases on the day putting her career mark at 70.

Heidelberg softball (9-3, 1-1 OAC) will attempt to reschedule their contest with Defiance College early this coming week before traveling to Bluffton University on Wednesday, March 26.
