Student Princes split second day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Heidelberg University Softball team split on day two of the Florida Spring Games. In the morning, The Berg fell to Hope College, 9-1. The team bounced back in the afternoon with a 8-6 win over Hood College.

GAME ONE:  HOPE 9-13-0    BERG 1-6-0

Hope came out strong and kept the momentum rolling through the first four innings, scoring two runs in each of the first three frames and adding another in the fourth. The Student Princes found themselves trailing The Dutch 7-0 in the sixth when freshman Cara Meyer lifted a fly ball to center field, allowing Ellie Tressler to slide safely into home and put Berg on the scoreboard.

Hope answered with two more runs later in the inning to seal a 9-1 win over Heidelberg.

Leah Arnett and Cara Meyer led the offense with two hits a piece.

GAME TWO:  BERG 8-9-4    HOOD 6-13-1

Despite a delayed start for the second game and the blazing Florida heat, The Berg came out on top against Hood College, 8-6.

In the first inning, Ellie Tressler put Berg up on the board first with a two-RBI single to left field, bringing in Adyson Bowe and Leah Arnett. Hood answered in the second after an RBI single from Sydney Weaver, cutting the score to 2-1.

The Student Prince defense held strong in the top of the fourth, keeping Hood off the scoreboard. Freshman Alexis Burton turned up the Florida heat in the bottom of the inning, sending a scorching shot over the center field fence to give Berg a 3-1 lead. Keeping the bats hot, Leah Arnett doubled to left field tallying two RBI, with Carmen Moore and Morgan Franklin crossing home plate, keeping HU in the lead, 5-1.

Hood's Taylor Lowe scored in the fifth off an RBI from Sam Larkin, giving the Blazers momentum going into the sixth where they scored twice in the top of the inning. HU's Meyer and Arnett scored in the bottom of the inning, making the score 8-4.

The Blazers fought back in the top of the seventh with two runs, but fell short as Berg closed out the game with a victory.
