CLERMONT, Fla. -- After a much-needed day away from the ballfield, the Heidelberg University Softball team rallied for a pair of victories. HU scored all its runs of the 8-3 win over Suffolk in the final two innings, then scored six in the final two frames of a 10-6 win over Penn St. Behrend in the nightcap.
The wins pushed HU to 5-3 on the season. The win over Behrend was the 100th career victory for Head Coach
Mari Briggs, now in her seventh season. She is third on the program's all-time list, trailing Betsy Hada (170 wins from 2009-2016) and Jim Miccichi (109 wins from 1993-1998).
GAME ONE: BERG 8-10-2 SUFFOLK 3-9-2
Down 2-0 in the top of the sixth, the Student Princes sprang to life. Infield singles by
Leah Arnett and
Hannah Hashman started the rally.
Cara Meyer tripled to right, tying the game at 2, but was then tagged out on a fielder's choice. Pinch hitter
Abbie Marshall walked, and a sac bunt from
Megan Miller put runners on second and third. A mishandled ground ball through traffic on the left side resulted in the go-ahead run crossing the plate for HU.
Suffolk tied the game in the sixth, but stranded the potential go-ahead run at second.
In the top of the seventh, HU exploded for five runs -- all coming with two outs. Hashman singled to right center and sprinted around the bases and scored on a double by Meyer.
Ellie Tressler followed with an RBI single to center, then Marshall drove in a run with a base hit to right. A walk and a single loaded the bases for
Carmen Moore. The senior lined a single to left that plated Miller and Marshall.
Kamryn Rastigue relieved starter
Haley Gockstetter to start the seventh and worked a 1-2-3 inning to seal the win. Gockstetter allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits, fanning four.
GAME TWO: BERG 10-7-2 BEHREND 6-9-0
The offense continued its momentum into the nightcap, despite dodging a few raindrops. After Hashman walked and Meyer singled, Tressler put The Berg out in front with an RBI single down the line in left. Marshall singled, loading the bases for
Adyson Bowe. Bowe singled up the middle, plating Meyer.
Alexis Burton capped the three-run first inning with an RBI ground out.
Arnett singled to start the second and eventually scored on a sac fly by Meyer. HU led, 4-0.
Until they didn't. Behrend scored four times to tie the game in the third, then pushed across two in the fifth.
The Lions walked five of the first six 'Berg batters in the bottom of the fifth, forcing in a run.
Abbey Hoertz scampered home on a passed ball, tying the game. With one out, Arnett lifted a ball to right that allowed Moore to score.
The Student Princes tacked on two more in the sixth. Marshall doubled to deep left, driving in Meyer. Bowe tripled, plating pinch runner
Morgan Franklin.
Gockstetter, who put out a fire in the fifth, got the win in relief. She threw 2.1 hitless innings in the second game, striking out two.
Taylor Forrest got the start, going 4.1 innings.
