Softball sweeps, concludes trip with seven wins

CLERMONT, Fla. -- With a pair of wins on Friday, the Heidelberg University Softball team wrapped up their time at The Spring Games with a 7-3 record. The Student Princes walked off with a 5-4 win in eight innings against North Central, then toppled Mount St. Joseph, 9-5.

Five 'Berg starters finished the trip to the south with a batting average north of .400. Cara Meyer led the way, hitting .452 with five extra base hits and 13 RBI. Hannah Hashman and Leah Arnett set the table at the top of the lineup, hitting .444 and .441 respectively. Adyson Bowe is hitting .417 and has a team-best on-base percentage, .533. Abbie Marshall has a team-high four doubles and hit .414 on the trip.

Haley Gockstetter went 5-1 on the trip, finishing with a 3.27 ERA in 30.0 innings of work. Taylor Forrest was 2-2, throwing 25.2 innings.

GAME ONE:   BERG 5-12-3   NCC 4-10-0 (8 innings)

Hashman reached on a bunt single in the first, then swiped second and third before scoring on a groundout by Meyer.

The Student Princes held on to the 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth. The Cardinals scored three times to momentarily grab the momentum.

HU responded in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and the bases empty, Arnett singled and dashed for third on a basehit by Hashman, who wisely took second on the throw to third. Meyer added to her stellar opening week with a two-run single past a diving first baseman, tying the game.

In the eighth, North Central loaded the bases with one out. On a single up the middle, the lead runner scored, but Arnett fired the ball on a line to the plate. There, Ellie Tressler applied the tag for the second out. Bowe needed a strong throw on a bouncer to short to get the third out, and did. NCC led, 4-3.

With Meyer placed on second for the international tiebreaker, Tressler singled to short. With one out, Meyer and Tressler advanced on a stolen base. Bowe squibbed a single to second that drove in the tying run. Alexis Burton capped the trip with a single through the left side, plating Tressler with the game-winner.

Taylor Forrest worked all eight innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits. She fanned one.

GAME TWO:  BERG 9-11-0  MSJ 5-9-3

The Student Princes raced out to a strong start in the final game of the week -- using four hits,  walk, two hit batters, and three MSJ errors to plate six runs.  Meyer, Marshall, and Bowe all had RBI hits.
Up 6-1 in the top of the fourth, Heidelberg added three more. Marshall doubled in two and Bowe singled in one.

The Lions scored three in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth, but Haley Gockstetter went the distance for the victory. She scattered nine hits and struck out one.
