Wrestling Teams Compete in 2025 Home Opener

TIFFIN -- Six days shy of its 175th birthday, Heidelberg University celebrated a historic first -- hosting its first-ever NCAA Women's Wrestling match. The much-awaited contest, along with the men's match before it, drew an incredible crowd to Seiberling Gymnasium. Despite a 37-11 loss on the men's side and a 40-10 setback on the women's side, both to John Carroll, the crowd was entertained and engaged from start to finish.

In between the duals with the Blue Streaks, Heidelberg Provost Dr. Courtney DeMayo Pugno and Vice President Ashley Helmstetter squared off in an exhibition match that raised more than $6,000 dollars for the team.

The men dropped the first five bouts before Travis Richardson rolled over his opponent at 165. Midway through the third period, he secured the tech fall, winning 17-2.

Owen Frizzell moved to 4-0 on the season with a pin at 184. All four of Frizzell's wins this season have come via pins.

In their home debut, the ladies dropped their first two matches before Audrey Miracle, wrestling at 117 pounds, electrified the crowd with a first-period fall, securing Heidelberg's first-ever home victory in program history. The Berg then conceded three forfeits before Gianna Tardibuono added another victory, earning a second-period pin in the 145 bout.

The men are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 8 when they travel to the Trine Invitational. That event will begin at 10 a.m. The ladies are back in action on Friday, Nov. 18, when they travel to Manchester University for a Tri-Dual with Manchester and Elmhurst. That is slated for a 4 p.m. start time.
