Dr. Brian Haley

A three-time Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Yearrecipient, Dr. Brian Haley will be embarking on his 26th seasonwith the Heidelberg men's soccer team in 2014. Haley has guided theStudent Princes to 16 winning seasons including nine of the lasteleven.

In two and a half decades, Coach Haley has collected over 200victories. Entering the 2014 season,  Haley's overall recordstands at 228-176-39 with an Ohio Athletic Conference record of107-96-23. Following the 2013 season, he holds a career winningpercentage of .559. His .559 career winning percentage is currentlythird best among active Heidelberg head coaches.

The highlight of Haley's career came in 2010 when the StudentPrinces won the first Ohio Athletic Conference regular season titlein program history. The 2010 team went 14-4-2 overall and anunbeaten 7-0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Haley's 2010 squad garnered two all-region selections, fourall-Ohio selections, one Ohio Athletic Conference Player of theYear in forward Cory Buhrman and six all-Ohio Athletic Conferenceselections. It was also the year that coach Haley earned his thirdOhio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award.

Before Haley's arrival in 1989, the Heidelberg program was stillattempting to find their identity. Haley spent his first five yearsat Heidelberg building today's premier soccer program from what hadbeen a mediocre program. The Berg had five straight losing seasonsprior to Haley taking over the program, but Brian stepped right inand led the Berg to a winning season in his first campaign at8-5-3. That season began a journey from out of the basement of theOhio Athletic Conference.

Other accolades attributed to Haley’s skillful coachinginclude his 150th win in 2005, followed by his 200th victory in2010 that came against OAC foe Mount Union on Oct. 16. Haleyrecorded his best season in 1999 when the Student Princes played toa 17-3 record.  

In 1994, Brian brought a first to the Heidelberg men's program;a national soccer ranking. Haley led the team to an overall recordof 10-6-2 and a runner-up finish in the OAC with a record of 5-2-2and snagged his first league Coach of the Year honor.

In 2012, Coach Haley collected his 100th Ohio AthleticConference victory over the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace onOctober, 9.

To date, Dr. Haley has coached 18 first team all-OAC honorees,two Academic All-Americans, two All-Americans and 21 AcademicAll-OAC selections.

Prior to being named Heidelberg's head coach in '89, Haleyserved as the head of the physical education and historydepartments at the Licensed Victuallers School in England

Personal: Dr. Brian Haley graduated fromSt Bede's Grammar School in Bradford Yorkshire where he captainedhis school team while representing his local and county teams. Heearned a bachelor of education from Leeds Carnegie where hecaptained the college team.

Upon graduation Haley worked as a graduate assistant in KentState University's education department. While at Kent State, heworked as an assistant coach and played professional soccer in theAmerican Soccer League in Cleveland. After completing his master'sdegree, Haley returned to England to continue his playing career inthe East Counties League for Ossett Town and EccleshillUnited. He is an English Association Football Coach and holdsan Advanced National Diploma (Colorado College, 1996) and thePremier Coaching License (Bloomsburg University, 2006). He alsocompleted his doctorate in education from the University of Toledoin 2000 and teaches several courses in Heidelberg's educationdepartment.
