Biography

AUSTIN, Texas -- Heidelberg University football kicker/punter Stephen Smith has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division III Football Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Smith, a senior music - organ performance major from Tiffin, is the 21st Academic All-American in school history.

"Stephen has been an outstanding representative of Heidelberg football," said head coach Mike Hallett. "His performance on the field has been excellent. More importantly, he has been an exceptional example for our student-athletes about how to excel in the classroom."

Though Smith handled punting duties as well, he was selected as a placekicker on the Academic All-America team. This season Smith, a graduate of Calvert High School, kicked eight field goals and 40 extra points for a total of 64 points. In his career, Smith contributed 167 points to the high-powered Student Prince attack.

With the honor, another medallion will be placed on the Adams Academic All-American Plaza outside of Hoernemann Stadium. Four other Heidelberg football players have earned Academic All-American status, including Craig Sykes '13, who earned the honor twice.

The Adams Academic All-American Plaza, made possible through a generous gift from the John Q. and Patricia Adams Foundation, was rededicated in early November.

The CoSIDA Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2015-16 Division III Academic All-America® teams program.
