TIFFIN, Ohio—Heidelberg College senior Jason Maus (Van Wert) has been named third-team Verizon Academic All-American College Division Men's Track/Cross Country Team announced today by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Maus was named first-team All-District earlier this year to qualify for the national ballot and become the first Verizon Academic All-American at Heidelberg since Aaron Fischer (baseball) and Joe Conduah (track) in the spring of 2000.
Maus' honors in the classroom speak for themselves; he had maintained a 3.97 grade-point-average through his first seven semesters while being active in a sport the entire time running cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Majoring in business administration, maus was chosen as first-team Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference, for the third time, earlier this month and is a three-time Academic All-American selection in cross country. He is a three-time member of the National Dean's List and has been named to the Heidelberg Dean's List every semester.
He earned the 2001 Financial Executive International Award and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta. He is a two-term president of the Business Club and is a member of the pre-law club, "H" Association, Tau Pi Phi Business Honorary, and Heidelberg Honors Society.
On the track, his honors are still falling into place. Maus won the 1500-meters during the OAC Outdoor championships on Saturday with a time that earned him a provisional bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships in two weeks. He is currently ranked 22nd in the nation and will compete at Baldwin-Wallace's Lace Chance Meet on Friday in an effort to earn a trip to St. Paul, Minn. Regardless of the outcome, Maus has made his mark on both the cross country and track circuit during his career at Heidelberg.
On the outdoor circuit, Maus holds two Heidelberg records claimed his first OAC individual title this past Saturday. He is on the record books as a member of 3200-meter relay and distance medley teams. He also was a member of the conference winning 3200-meter relay team in 1999. He has earned All-OAC accolades, for finishing in the top three, all four years at Heidelberg and was a runner-up in the 1500 in 2001. He was the Heidelberg team captain this past season.
In cross country, Maus is a two-time All-Conference selection and earned a bid to the national championships in 1999. He earned All-Region honors in 2000 and was the team captain his senior season. As a team, The 'Berg claimed three OAC titles in his four years, finishing second the other season, and earned two bids to the national championships.
He currently holds the Heidelberg indoor track record as a member of the 3200-meter relay team with a time of 7:55 and was on the 3200-meter relay 1999 OAC championship team. He also won the conference crow in the 800 meters at the same meet. He qualified for the conference championships in 2002 in six events (800, 1000, 1500, 5000, 4x400, 4x800). At Ohio Northern's Friday Night Series he claimed first in the 1000 and 1500 in the same meet.
Calvin College senior Joel Klooster was tabbed as Verizon Academic All-American of the Year for the College Division. Klooster, a resident of Chatham, Ont., posted a 3.98 grade-point-average in electrical engineering.
Verizon Academic All-Americans are nominated and voted on by members of CoSIDA, players that earn first-team All-District are forwarded to the national ballot for All-American selection.
