On Tuesday, Heidelberg University softball player Ali Sayre (Sylvania/Northview) was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Softball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Sayre earned third team honors.
Sayre, who graduated earlier this month, was a political science major with a perfect 4.0 GPA. As a pitcher, Sayre amassed seven wins in 2013 for a career total of 21, which puts her in a tie for fifth on Heidelberg's career list.
The southpaw's career ERA, 2.74, is the third best mark in 'Berg history.
During each season, Sayre took time away from the team to attend the Model United Nations Far West conference in San Francisco. This year, Sayre served as the Secretary-General, the most prestigious role at the gathering.
Prior to graduating summa cum laude, Sayre won a bevy of Heidelberg awards. Included among the awards was the Daniel J. and W.J.K. Snyder Prize, given to a graduating male and female who were adjudged by the faculty to have excelled in leadership based upon character and scholarship.
"The entire Heidelberg community benefitted from Ali's relentless determination," said fifth-year head coach Betsy Hada '01. "In the classroom and on the diamond, Ali was a true leader."
Sayre is the second player in 'Berg softball history to be named to the list, joining Jenny Coletta, a third team selection in 2006.
