VB extends win streak to 14 matches

Set streak snapped at 37

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- One streak was snapped, but the more important one rolls on.

The Heidelberg University Volleyball team beat host Muskingum University in four -- 19-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-22 -- in a hotly contested OAC matchup. The first set loss snapped a string of 37 straight set wins, but by rallying for the victory, the Student Princes ran their match win streak to 14.

Emily Miller carried the burden of the offense, tallying 16 kills in 49 swings. Sophia Simon and Ava Devereaux both added eight while Riley Tople contributed seven.

Setters Maddie Reed and Olivia Miller each had 17 assists.

Defensively, Reagan Davis had 22 digs and successfully received all 22 serves sent her way. Olivia Miller had 19 digs and Emily Miller had 14.

After getting punched in the mouth for the first time since early September, Heidelberg found themselves down 8-2 at the onset of set two. Later, down 16-11, HU went on a 5-0 run to even the set. Teams jostled for momentum before the Muskies were ahead, 24-22. A service error and an ace from Simon tied the set at 24. From there, HU won it with a pair of kills from Emily Miller.

In the third set, Heidelberg found some late separation. Tied at 16, HU closed on a 9-4 run.

With their backs against the wall, the Muskies roared out to an 11-3 lead.  The hosts led 20-15 and seemed poised to force a fifth set -- but Muskingum errors allowed HU to crawl back into the set.  The Student Princes powered their way to the victory with a 10-2 sprint to the finish line.

The win over Muskingum was Heidelberg's first over the Muskies in 10 tries, dating back to 2017.

Heidelberg hosts No. 20 Otterbein at Seiberling Gymnasium on Wednesday. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
