ADA, Ohio -- A late surge by Ohio Northern forced overtime and clutch shooting in the final minute led to a victory over the Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team, 86-82. Heidelberg slipped to 7-6 overall, 1-3 in OAC play.
Trey Killens had a team-high 23 points -- one of four in double figures for HU.
Marcos Vazquez had 17,
Markell Johnson-Nichols had 12 and
Riley Gossom had 10.
Heidelberg led by as many as 20, and held a 15-point advantage with two minutes left in regulation. The Polar Bears fought back, tying the game on a three-point play with less than 10 seconds left. An attempted game-winner for Killens was too late, forcing the extra session.
In overtime, ONU built a six-point lead -- but Heidelberg answered back. A layup by
Jarveil Gainey tied the contest at 82 with under 30 seconds left. A tough turn-around jumper by Will Miller gave ONU an 84-82 lead with 15.4 left.
On the ensuing possession, HU went to the line but missed the pair. The Polar Bears grabbed the rebound, connected on their foul shots, and emerged with the win.
Gainey had a team-high 11 rebounds in the loss.
Heidelberg held a 26-10 edge in fast break points, but ONU had a 43-42 advantage in rebounding.
The Student Princes are back in action Saturday at home, with a matchup against Marietta College. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
