TIFFIN -- Done in by a second half cold spell, the Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team was knocked out of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in the semifinals by Mount Union. The Purple Raiders won, 77-66, ending HU's tourney run for the fourth straight year.
Heidelberg, the No. 3 seed, slipped to 17-10 overall, while No. 2 Mount Union improved to 18-8. The Purple Raiders will travel to No. 1 John Carroll on Saturday for the OAC Championship.
The Student Princes, who led by as many as 11, were outscored in the final 10 minutes, 25-10.
Manny Hill and
Eric Panning both had 21 points and nine rebounds on the evening, leading the Student Princes. MTU's Elijah Farrington had 25 points and nine boards.
Markell Johnson-Nichols added 11 points and four assists.
In the first half, Panning became the second player in Heidelberg history to eclipse the 1,000-rebound threshold. Chris Reichert had 1,043 boards between 1975-79.
With 12 conference wins, the Student Princes had 10+ OAC victories for the fourth straight year -- the first such streak in school history. The team has won 70 games over the past four seasons, the second-best mark for the Tricolor.
