WILMINGTON, Ohio -- With a resounding 86-63 victory over Wilmington College on Saturday, the Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team secured the No. 3 seed in next week's Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. The Student Princes will host an OAC Quarterfinal in Seiberling Gymnasium on Tuesday -- but the opponent is still unknown.
The Student Princes have been the No. 3 seed in the tournament in each of the past four seasons.
On Saturday, The Berg used a well-balanced attack to upend the Quakers. Six HU players finished in double figures, led by 12-point performances from
Elijah Harden and
Kevin Reynald Jr. Zane Leitwein and
Brady Bosma each had 11 while
Manny Hill and
Mason Wisniewski both added 10 points.
Eric Panning had 15 rebounds and
Jaiden Guerra-Howard contributed five assists.
Wilmington led by a basket five minutes into the game, but HU responded with an 11-0 run to take control. Later, a dunk by WC's Obed Archiem brought the hosts to within two at 25-23 -- but HU answered with a 3-pointer by
Riley Gossom.
Heidelberg led by 15 at halftime, 41-26.
The Quakers were unable to make a dent in the 'Berg lead in the second half. Each time Wilmington gathered a modicum on momentum, a different Student Prince stepped up to contribute a timely basket.
HU shot 49.3% for the game, including 7-of-17 from beyond the arc. One game after being pounded by John Carroll on the glass, HU out-rebounded Wilmginton, 45-27.
Heading into the tournament, Panning has 982 career rebounds and Leitwein has 983 career points.
John Carroll won the OAC Regular Season and Mount Union took the No. 2 seed -- and both receive first round byes. Heidelberg and No. 4 seed Muskingum host first round contests on Tuesday. The No. 5 and 6 seeds will be determined by the outcome of the Otterbein-Capital game on Saturday evening.
