GREENSBORO, N.C. – It took a little longer than 40 minutes, but the Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team picked up their first win of the Mike Summey era, defeating Greensboro
College in overtime, 77-74.
The Student Princes saw an outstanding performance by
Marcos Vazquez. The senior transfer from Shawnee State put up 25 points, shot 3-4 from behind the arc, and had 10 rebounds.
Trey Killens, also a senior transfer, added 18 points and went 3-4 from the free throw line. Star returner
Markell Johnson-Nichols matched Killens from the line, also going 3-4, while pulling down 10 rebounds, and recorded Berg's only block from the game.
The Berg raced out to a 44-26 halftime lead, shooting a blistering 53% in the first half.
Trey Killens teamed up with Vazquez to torch the host from the opening tip. Heidelberg's defensive pressure forced 11 Greensboro turnovers while converting them into 15 points, going on a 20-7 run.
In the second half, Greensboro clawed back into the game, turning Heidelberg's once commanding lead into a back and forth nail-biter as the Berg offense went ice cold. However, with eight seconds left in regulation, Killens made the front end of two free throws, and Heidelberg's defense forced a bad shot late to send the game into overtime.
From there, Johnson-Nichols took over, scoring six of the 12 for Heidelberg, including the go-ahead layup at the 2:30 mark, and the 75-72 bucket with 51 seconds to play. Vazquez sank the final jumper to secure the victory for the visitors.
Heidelberg is back in action on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15 when they host the Ron Linhart Memorial Classic. They will take on Ohio Wesleyan on Friday at 5:30 p.m., and John Carroll on Saturday at 3 p.m.
