VB survives Big Red scare

GRANVILLE -- Showcasing their flair for the dramatic, the Heidelberg University Volleyball team salvaged a 3-2 triumph over host Denison University on Thursday -- winning the fifth set after giving up a two-set lead. Nonetheless, the Student Princes won, 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 24-26, 18-16.

The fifth set alone featured 11 lead changes and 10 ties, with both teams teetering on the edge with match point. In the end, it was a block by seniors Gabby Wolfe and Kaitlyn Uffman that secured the long-awaited victory.

Heidelberg dominated play at the net, holding a 21-5 edge in total blocks. Sophia Simon led the way with a total of 11 -- five solo and six assists. Uffman added three solo and four assists.

Simon hit .385 and had a team-high 17 kills on the night. Uffman and Rylee Ritzhaupt tallied 11 each.

Maddie Reed dished up 28 assists and Olivia Miller had 16. Grace Dohanyos registered 23 digs.

After winning the first two sets, Heidelberg slipped in the third. Undaunted, the Student Princes were in a position to win in the fourth, but couldn't convert with a 24-23 lead. The Big Red rallied for the final three points to force a fifth.

Denison led by as many as three in the tumultuous fifth set, but Heidelberg battled back. The set was tied at 13 before a Denison kill put them up 14-13. After a timeout, Ritzhaupt staved off elimination with a kill, and Uffman put HU on the brink of victory with a kill on the next play. The hosts answered with two straight, and led 16-15. From there, Uffman delivered a powerful cross-court kill that was followed by an ace from Reagan Davis. Denison called a timeout to regroup, but after a lengthy rally, the block from Uffman and Wolfe touched off a joyous 'Berg celebration.

Heidelberg, which improved to 15-12, will celebrate Senior Day in Seiberling Gymnasium on Saturday. The match with Muskingum is slated to start at 1 p.m.
