TIFFIN -- In their home opener, the Heidelberg University Volleyball team upended the visiting Earlham College Quakers in four sets. After dominating the first set and falling flat in the second, the Student Princes outlasted the Quakers in the third and rode the momentum into the fourth. HU won, 25-15, 17-25, 30-28, 25-21.
Maddie Reed had five service aces in the win, including a string of three straight in the opening set. The sophomore added 26 assists. Â
Kaitlyn Uffman scored 11.5 points for the Tricolor, picking up eight kills and five total blocks.
The Riley/Rylees were also active at the net, with Riley Tople and Rylee Ritzhaupt each adding eight kills and Riley Ameel notching seven blocks and a nosebleed.Â
Libero Grace Dohanyos acrobatically picked up 28 digs.
The pivotal third set was a seesaw battle. Earlham scored five straight early, but surrendered four in a row as HU tied the set at 9-9. Down 13-10, Heidelberg appeared to take control, scoring the next eight points with Reed at the serve. Later, ahead 22-15, HU watched helplessly as the Quakers powered home the next seven. The sides traded set-point opportunities on five occasions before a Tople kill and a Quaker error ended it.Â
Down 14-11 in the fourth, a five-point run slingshotted HU back into the lead -- capped off by a kill from Dohanyos. Moments later, another five point run all but sealed the win for the hosts. A wild last point was ended with a deep setter attack from Olivia Miller, who finished with 12 assists.
The Student Princes return to action tomorrow, September 18th, as they travel to Findlay. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. It's a family reunion of sorts, as Head Coach Jason Miller and freshman setter Olivia Miller square off against Oilers' #15 Hannah, the oldest Miller daughter.Â
