TIFFIN --
Eric Panning's record-setting 17th double-double of the year helped propel the Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team to a much-needed conference win on Wednesday. The Student Princes upended Capital University, 73-65, rallying from a 13-point hole.
Panning finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds, contributing two thunderous dunks that helped ignite the Seiberling Gymnasium crowd.
Isaiah Young came off the bench and scored a game-high 21 points -- including a perfect 9-for-9 from the line.
Shooting a woeful 6-of-38 from the floor (and 0-for-13 from beyond the arc) in the first half, Heidelberg was only down five at halftime. The Student Princes were fortunate to go 11-for-14 from the line, helping cut the Comets lead down from as high as 13.
The Berg had two looks at 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds, but rimmed out on both. Capital led at half, 28-23.
Heidelberg withstood an early-second half run by the Comets and inched back to even at the 11:31 mark of the second half.
Brady Bosma went coast-to-coast for the tying layup. The visitors answered with a 3-pointer and a fast-break layup off a missed 'Berg triple.
Unlike Saturday's disappointing loss at Muskingum, in which Heidelberg was never able to fully crawl back from a double-digit deficit, HU roared back with an 11-0 run, taking their first lead since early in the first half.
Ahead 49-43 with 8:01 to play, Heidelberg staved off all Comets comeback attempts thanks to timely baskets and a strong performance at the line.
