UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – After nearly a three week layoff, the Heidelberg University Wrestling team returned to the mats on Thursday evening taking on John Carroll. In their final dual meet of the season, HU came out on top, 23-18 over the Blue Streaks.
Heidelberg took an early 6-0 lead thanks to a forfeit in the 125 pound weight class. At 133 pounds,
David Gelman was in a close match with the score knotted at 10-10 with just eight seconds left in third period. Thanks to a fault from John Carroll's Ty Daughtery, Gelman won the match 11-10 giving HU the 9-0 advantage.
Drew Miller continued Heidelberg's run as he won by decision, 13-9 in the 141 pound weight class.
Claude Buckmaster took on Kyle Bizjak at 149 and also won by decision, 17-10, giving HU a four match winning streak.
John Carroll's Partrick McGraw stalled the HU run as he took down
Anthony Grecol via Tech Fall at 157. The 165 pound weight class featured
Carter Mock who fell by pin.
TJ Rhamy was next up for The Berg at 174 where he fell in a tough match, 7-2.
With the score 15-14 in favor of Heidelberg, Adam Mederios was looking to stretch the lead. He was able to do so winning by major decision over Bear Horgan to give HU the 19-14 advantage.
The final two matches of the evening featured
Aidan Belgiorno at 197 pounds and
Demitrius Hernandez at 285. Belgiorno fell by major decision while Hernandez secured the major decision win to give the Student Princes the 23-18 win.
Heidelberg has a quick turnaround as they participate in the Mid States Invitational at Trine University on Saturday for a tuneup before Regionals.
