The Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team concluded the Ron Linhart Memorial Tournament with an impressive 85-78 victory over No. 9 Calvin University in the consolation game. **
Eric Panning** earned All-Tournament honors after scoring 19 points on both Friday and Saturday.
GAME ONE: Heidelberg vs. Manchester
The Student Princes fought hard but fell short against Manchester, 92-88, in the tournament's opening game.
Markell Johnson-Nichols led the team with 20 points on 9-15 shooting, while
Eric Panning contributed 19 points and seven rebounds.
Kevin Reynald Jr. and
Manny Hill also reached double digits with 17 and 14 points, respectively.
The game featured an exciting back-and-forth start, but the Berg fell behind as Manchester shot an incredible 75% from beyond the arc. Heidelberg struggled from the line and managed just 50% from three-point range.
In the second half, Heidelberg's offensive firepower was on full display, outscoring Manchester 54-47 and including charging back with 9-0 scoring run. However, the Spartans took the lead late and held on for the victory.
Despite Heidelberg's dominance in points in the paint (28-16), Manchester's 14 three-pointers and 72% shooting from the free-throw line proved decisive.
The loss dropped Heidelberg to 1-2, while Manchester improved to 2-0.
GAME TWO: Heidelberg vs. No. 9 Calvin
The Heidelberg Student Princes bounced back with a commanding 85-78 win over No. 9 Calvin in the tournament's consolation game.
Elijah Harden led all scorers with 20 points, while
Eric Panning dominated in the paint with 19 points on 7-10 shooting and seven rebounds.
Zane Leitwein added 14 points, including a perfect 3-3 from three-point range.
Heidelberg's defense was a difference-maker, forcing Calvin into 13 turnovers and converting them into 18 points. The Student Princes also shined in the paint, outscoring Calvin 32-30, and from the free-throw line, where they shot an impressive 82.8%. The bench stepped up with a 26-point contribution.
The second half was decisive, as Heidelberg extended its lead to 14 points with several critical defensive stops, led by
Eric Panning and
Manny Hill, who each grabbed five defensive rebounds.
With the win, Heidelberg wrapped up the tournament with a 1-1 record, taking third place. The Berg is 2-2 to start the young season.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh captured the tournament title with a comeback victory over Manchester.
The Student Princes return to action on Wednesday at home against Kenyon, with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
