Focinos caps Homecoming with GWG

TIFFIN -- A goal by Inigo Focinos in the final minute of the match lifted the Heidelberg University Men's Soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Muskingum University. The goal put a bow on a wildly entertaining, physical contest that capped off a joyous Homecoming Weekend in Tiffin.

Hussein Faraj put Heidelberg on the board in the 24th minute, blistering a shot from the right wing into the net. It was his second goal of the season.

The Student Princes doubled their lead in the 36th minute. Cody Springer's throw-in on the left wing landed on the feet of Malachi Perkins along the end line. Perkins quickly touched it into the box where Brenden Turner headed it past the goalkeeper.  Heidelberg led 2-0.

Muskingum answered quickly with a goal less than a minute later.

The Student Princes held their 2-1 advantage until late in the contest.  Parrying a multitude of Muskingum chances, HU desperately tried to drain the clock. Disaster struck in the 84th minute when the Muskies found an equalizer on a 'Berg own-goal.

Tied at 2, both teams frantically tried to find a goal that would potentially yield their first conference win of the season. The Student Princes pushed the ball up the left side where Gavin Wickham emerged with a loose ball and turned back toward the center of the field. He deftly played the ball to a wide-open Focinos. The sophomore took one touch to corral it, then right-footed a low shot past the Muskie goalkeeper.

The goal, which came with 18 seconds left, touched off a joyous celebration in front of the bleachers.

A Muskingum restart opportunity in the final seconds of the half was not fruitful, and the Student Princes had emerged victorious.

The win was the first career victory for Ryan Miller, who made four saves in the game which featured nine yellow cards.

Heidelberg hosts Baldwin Wallace for the final home game of the season on Wednesday. The match is slated for 4 p.m. at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
