MARIETTA -- The Heidelberg University Volleyball team fought valiantly against unbeaten NO. 12 Marietta College, but fell in four sets -- 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 26-24. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Student Princes, who fell to 11-9, 2-1.
Riley Tople,
Grace Porter and
Lexi Wachtman each had eight kills on the afternoon. Porter added a solo block and five block assists to finish with 11.5 points.
Olivia Miller had 18 assists and
Maddie Reed added 17.
Grace Dohanyos had 33 digs.
A 16-2 Marietta run in the opening set was enough to put the hosts up one. They took control o the second set with a 9-2 run late.
Instead of packing it in, Heidelberg answered with a win in the third set. Tied at 14, HU took seven of the next nine points. Marietta crept back to within one at 22-21, but a service error and kills from Wachtman and Porter extended the match.
The final set was tight throughout, with an early Pioneer lead evaporating into a 9-9 tie. From there, neither side had more than a two-point cushion. HU staved off two match points with kills from
Gabby Wolfe and Tople, but the hosts took the final two points to win.
Heidelberg visits Ohio Northern on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. skirmish with the Polar Bears.
