MTU upends battered 'Berg

1/16/2024 8:28:00 PM

TIFFIN -- Competing at home for the first time in 2024, the Heidelberg University Wrestling team fought valiantly, but fell to Mount Union. Heidelberg picked up four wins, but lost the match, 28-16.

Prior to the match, Heidelberg honored seniors Aidan Belgiorno and TJ Rhamy for their contributions to the program. Normally in the starting lineup, both were held out due to injury. Rhamy, who joined the team last year, has 46 career wins and Belgiorno has amassed 21 victories in his time with the Tricolor.

With his team down 9-0, Drew Miller excited the crowd by scoring a takedown in the first three seconds of his bout with Mason McCarty. Miller would add one more before the end of the first and led, 6-1. He padded his lead with a pair of takedowns in the second, and battled to a 14-3 major decision.

Wrestling up at 165, Anthony Grecol used a first-period takedown to take a 3-0 advantage into the second period. Starting down, Grecol added a point for an escape less than 10 seconds into the period, then added three more points 15 seconds later and led 7-0. Neutral to begin the third, Mount's Jacob Starkey got on the board with a takedown midway through the third. A Starkey stalling call and a riding time point gave Grecol a 10-3 win.

An exciting opening minute had 184-pounder Adam Medeiros on top, 4-2 -- grabbing a takedown, yielding a reversal, then escaping. Medeiros added a takedown and led 7-2 after one. Up 8-3 in the third, Medeiros staved off all challenges and won 8-3.

The final 'Berg win came at 285 when Demitrius Hernandez capped the night with a pin on Steven Marra in the closing seconds of the first period.

Mount Union had bonus points in five of their six wins.

Heidelberg returns to action at home on Saturday, serving as host for an OAC Quad Dual. HU will face Wilmington, Ohio Northern, and Otterbein, starting at 11 a.m.
