DEFIANCE -- The revamped Heidelberg University men's soccer team began the 2023 season with a split at the Purple and Gold Invitational hosted by Defiance College. The Student Princes opened with a 1-0 win over Defiance on Friday, then fell to Wittenberg on Sunday, 2-0.
On Friday, the Student Princes and the Yellow Jackets were evenly matched. Defiance held a slim 12-10 margin in shots, but both teams struggled to finish in the final third.
Just before halftime, Heidelberg broke through on one of their five corner kicks. Freshman
Oscar Najera hit an in-swinging ball toward the far post. His classmate
Alagie Njie used his lengthy frame to leap over defenders and head the ball into the net.
Kaiden Reed led the Student Princes with four shots.

Bradshaw Uhlmann played all 90 minutes in goal, earning both his first collegiate win and shutout. He made five saves.
Battling the heat and the Tigers on Sunday, Heidelberg came up short. Wittenberg scored in the 31st and the 54th minute of action.
The Student Princes were limited to six shots, including two from Reed. Uhlmann faced 24 shots and made five saves in the loss.
Heidelberg returns to action at home on Wednesday as they welcome Bluffton to the Hidden Valley Sports Complex. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
