RESULTS
TIFFIN -- On Senior Day, the Heidelberg University wrestling team lost to visiting John Carroll University, 34-3, in both school's final OAC dual of the season. Prior to the match, the Student Princes honored six seniors --
Bobby Logan,
Gabriel Martinez,
Adam Medeiros,
Carson Mendoza-Pottenger,
Iosef Nunez and
Alex Westbrook.
At 125,
Cole Renier fell behind Eddie Wallace in the first period and trailed 10-1 midway through the second. A reversal late in the second gave the 'Berg sophomore life heading into the final period. The deficit was too much for Renier to overcome, as he lost, 13-6.
Nunez drew a tough assignment, facing No. 3 Andrew Perelka. Despite a valiant effort from Nunez, Perelka registered a first-period pin.
Moving up to 141,
Brandon D'Egidio trailed Anthony Santagata by a point to start the second. After a Santagata escape, D'Egidio was the aggressor throughout the second period -- finally eliciting a stalling warning late in the frame. Down 3-1 to start the third, the Heidelberg junior started down and quickly escaped. D'Egidio tied the match with a stalling point midway through the third and was seconds away from a takedown before the end of the third. In overtime, Santagata found a takedown 90 seconds in, taking the match and giving JCU a 12-0 lead.
At 149,
Claude Buckmaster was down 4-1 after one, but found an escape early in the second period. Behind 4-3 to start the third, Buckmaster took the lead with a takedown halfway through the frame. Tacking on a stalling point, Buckmaster emerged with a 6-4 win. Heidelberg trailed 12-3.
As the postseason approaches, freshman
Anthony Grecol faced a big test in No. 9 Patrick McGraw. McGraw led 4-1 after two takedowns in the first, then added an escape to start the second. The JCU junior continued to find success in the third and emerged with a 20-5 tech fall.
Following an entertaining intermission, action resumed at 165. Wrestling for the final time in Seiberling Gymnasium, graduate student
Jacob Horsch faced No. 4 Luke Reicosky. Reicosky used a takedown and four back points to take a 6-0 lead. Down 9-1 in the third, Horsch -- affectionately known as 'Jake Bob' -- battled for the entire match, but lost, 15-4.
With his team down 21-3,
Owen Frizzell battled JCU's Caiden Rodgers to a scoreless first period at 174. Starting down in the second, Frizzell escaped 25 seconds into the second. The pair traded escapes in the second and entered the third knotted at 1. Rodgers started down in the third and took the lead with a reversal early in the third. Ahead 3-2, Rodgers tacked on another takedown midway through the final period en route to a 5-3 win.
Medeiros took on Stefan Farian at 184 and was locked into a 0-0 tie after one. Starting down in the second, Medeiros took a 2-0 lead with a reversal. Farian escaped eight seconds later and trailed 2-1 after two. The Blue Streak escaped early in the third and tied the bout at 2. Just after the halfway point, Farian earned a takedown near the edge of the mat and led 4-2. Medeiros escaped with 17 seconds left, but was unable to land a takedown in the closing seconds.
At 197,
Aidan Belgiorno trailed JCU's Jesse Kantazar, 2-0, after one. An escape and a takedown helped Kantazar push his lead to 5-0 through two periods. A takedown and riding time point gave Kantazar an 8-0 win.
JCU's Tom Blackwell enjoyed early success against Martinez at 285 and led 6-2 after one. Martinez started down to begin the second and escaped, but later yielded another takedown. Midway through the second, the pair traded reversals. Blackwell led 10-6 after two, then added an escape and a takedown in the third. Late in the third, Martinez escaped and added a takedown, but fell 14-10.
In addition to the six wrestlers, HU also honored three senior managers -- Abi Bretz, Grace Anthony and Micayla Feltner.
Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday at the Mid-States Invitational, hosted by Olivet College.
