Wrestling goes 3-0 at Hiram

RESULTS: vs. CWRU | vs. CORNERSTONE | vs. HIRAM

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University wrestling team went a perfect 3-0 at the Hiram Duals on Saturday. The Student Princes rallied for a 27-19 win over Case Western Reserve, then romped Cornerstone and host Hiram, 43-8 and 47-3. The wins pushed HU to 7-6 in dual matches this season. 

Five 'Berg wrestlers were 3-0 on the day -- Brandon D'Egidio, Owen Frizzell, Adam Medeiros, Aidan Belgiorno and Gabriel Martinez. Montavious Yearby and Jacob Horsch went unbeaten splitting time at 165. 

In the opening dual with Case Western Reserve, the Spartans won four of the first five weight classes. The lone 'Berg win was a 4-1 win for D'Egidio at 133. With his team down 19-3, Yearby ignited the team with a pin of Calvin Cai early in the second period. Frizzell followed with a second-period fall at 174. HU took the lead at 184 when Medeiros won via injury default. Up 21-19, Belgiorno picked up a 6-3 win at 197 before Martinez closed with a 6-2 win at 285. 

Cornerstone took a 5-0 lead before Heidelberg took three forfeits and an 18-5 lead. Following a Cornerstone win at 157, Horsch battled his way to a 4-2 victory in overtime at 165. Frizzell followed with a first-period pin at 174 before Medeiros earned a 14-6 major decision at 184. The Student Princes added forfeit wins at 197 and 285. 

Cole Renier opened the Hiram match with a pin over Ian Fuentes. D'Egidio increased the HU lead with a 7-3 win at 133. Claude Buckmaster and Anthony Grecol had back-to-back pins at 149 and 157 before Yearby earned a 17-2 tech fall. With The Berg up 26-3, Frizzell, Medeiros and Belgiorno all had first-period pins. Martinez capped the day with an overtime win. 

Heidelberg returns to action on Tuesday when John Carroll visits Seiberling Gymnasium for an OAC dual. The event is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
