TIFFIN -- A late 8-0 run propelled the No. 3 seed Heidelberg University men's basketball team emerged with an 80-71 victory over No. 6 seed Capital University in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. The Student Princes advance to face No. 2 seed Mount Union in Alliance on Thursday.
Isaiah Young had a game-high 19 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the floor.
Emmanuel Perdue added 18 points, which included a handful of acrobatic layups.
Zane Leitwein danced through foul trouble to add 16 points, including four 3-pointers.
Ahead 16-14 midway through the first half, Heidelberg went on a modest 9-3 run, powered by two treys from Leitwein.
Capital fought back with an 11-2 spurt, taking a brief 28-27 lead on a 3-pointer by McKane Finkenbine, who finished with 15 points.
Out of a media timeout, Leitwein drilled another 3-pointer which kick started a 12-4 'Berg run to end the half. HU led 39-32 at the break.
The Comets rocketed forward early in the second half as Ryan Suever and Griffin Doseck combined to score all CAP's points on a 12-2 run. The outburst gave the visitors a 44-41 lead with 15:32 left in the game.
Undeterred, the Tricolor responded with a three-point play by
Jashun Cobb and a 3-pointer by sharp-shooting
Jacob Logsdon.
After the lead exchanged hands several times, Heidelberg embarked on a 10-0 run powered by Perdue and Logsdon. Later, Leitwein's fourth 3-pointer gave HU a 64-52 lead, their largest of the game.
Unwilling to end their season without a battle, the plucky Comets grinded out a 17-8 over a seven minute stretch. After a 3-pointer by Ryan Roth, Capital trailed, 72-69, with 2:20 remaining.
From there, HU sealed the win with an 8-0 run -- going 6-of-6 from the line.
Heidelberg forced the Comets to turn the ball over 20 times and the Berg would capitalize with 32 points on those miscues.
Eric Panning had seven points and eight boards while
Seth Hohman added five points and nine rebounds.
In an uncharacteristically cold night offensively, the 'Berg bench was outscored, 28-15.
The Student Princes swiped the ball away a season-high 13 times in the win.
Heidelberg will travel to Alliance on Thursday for the second round of the OAC Tournament to take on No. 2 Mount Union. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are available on BergAthletics.com.
