Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Berg cages Cardinals on Senior Day

TIFFIN -- With a 90-80 victory over Otterbein on Senior Day, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team locked up a home game in the upcoming OAC Tournament. The Student Princes had four players in double figures in the victory.

Prior to the game, Heidelberg honored seniors Emmanuel Perdue and Amil Jenkins.

Now 16-7 overall and 11-5 in OAC action, third-place Heidelberg has a two-game advantage over fourth-place Marietta with two games remaining in the regular season.

Sophomore transfer Jashun Cobb had a career-high 18 points off the bench on an efficient 6-of-7 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the line.  Seth Hohman hit a career-high six 3-pointers and also finished with 18 points.

Perdue had 15 points and four assists in his final regular season game in Seiberling Gymnasium.

Eric Panning registered his third double-double of the season and eighth of his career, collecting 12 points and 10 boards.

Cam Evans connected on a pair of 3-pointers that helped the Cardinals build an early seven point lead.  The Student Princes responded with a pair of tough layups by Perdue.  Otterbein continued to find buckets while Heidelberg struggled from the floor.  With eight minutes to play in the first half, Troy Scowden scooped in a layup that pushed the visitors up nine -- drawing a timeout from Heidelberg head coach Andy Bucheit.

Otterbein took a 13-point lead with 2:38 left in the first half -- their largest lead of the game.  Heidelberg responded with a 3-pointer from Cobb that ignited a major rally for the hosts.

With HU down eight in the closing seconds of the first half, Eric Panning won a fierce battle for a defensive board and was fouled with 0.1 seconds remaining. During the discussion of the incident, the Otterbein coach was saddled with a technical foul.  Isaiah Young sank both technical free throws, Panning made both of his in the bonus -- and in a snap, Heidelberg had the momentum rolling into halftime.

After the break, Heidelberg was dialed in from long range -- with Zane Leitwein, Perdue and Hohman (twice) all connecting from beyond the arc.  A 31-6 run ended with two consecutive three-point plays by Cobb and Jenkins.  The outburst turned a 13-point hole into a 12-point lead for the Student Princes.

From there, Heidelberg expanded their lead to as many as 18.  Otterbein ratcheted up their defensive intensity with five minutes to play and whittled the 'Berg lead to as few as seven.  Heidelberg staved off the comeback attempt.

The Student Princes finished 11-of-24 (45.8%) from beyond the arc and shot 29-of-56 (51.8%) from the floor.

Otterbein, led by a 19-point day from Julian Heckman, dropped to 14-9 overall, 8-8 in the OAC.

Heidelberg wraps up the regular season with a pair of games on the road.  On Wednesday, the Student Princes visit Ohio Northern for a 7 p.m. showdown. On Saturday, HU will travel to Marietta.
