Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Young drops career-high in win over Cardinals

WESTERVILLE -- He's more than just a kid from Akron.

He's the Heidelberg University Student Senate president and a triple major.

And, after a 34-point performance at Otterbein on Saturday, junior Isaiah Young is the owner of a new career high.

The Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team emerged with a hard-fought 10-point win on the road on Saturday.  Young shot 11-for-17 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the line, sprinkling in eight rebounds along the way.

Heidelberg, now 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the OAC, won, 87-77.

Eric Panning was the only other Heidelberg player to finish in double figures as he finished with 11. Coupled with 10 rebounds, Panning picked up his eighth double-double to start the season.

Heidelberg jumped out to a quick five-point lead after a fastbreak three from Tre Watkins made the score 7-2. The Cardinals struck back and took their first lead of the game, 12-10, following a Cam Evans shot from distance.

The Cardinals (4-3, 0-2) stretched their lead to four, but The Berg bounced back and took the one-point lead following a jumper from Jashun Cobb making it 17-16 with 12:27 remaining in the half. A mid-range shot from Watkins vaulted HU to a 25-18 advantage just under the halfway mark in the first half.

The Student Princes largest lead came with 7:24 remaining in the half, as Zane Leitwein completed the hoop and harm making it 32-20. Otterbein cut into their deficit following a Chase Garito layup to bring them within six.

Both teams traded buckets the rest of the half but Heidelberg took the 42-34 lead into the break.

With their deficit growing, the Cardinals were not deterred and got within three points at 46-43, after a layup in the paint from the home squad. Undeterred, back-to-back jumpers from Young pushed HU's lead to nine at the 15 minute mark of the second half of play.

Panning helped the visitors see their largest lead of the day, as he made two free throws from the charity stripe making it 65-53.

With under 10 minutes to go, Otterbein forced The Berg into a turnover resulting in the Cardinals splitting a pair from the free throw line to cut their deficit to just four.

The hosts took their first lead since the fifth minute of the game after an Evans fastbreak score with 3:31 left in the game put Otterbein up, 77-75.
Seeing their lead vanish, Young helped HU fight back and take a 83-77 lead with under a minute to play. Otterbein was unable to cut back into the deficit, going scoreless over the final 3:31 -- resulting in the 87-77 win for Heidelberg.
