TIFFIN -- Battling their second consecutive ranked opponent, the Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team upset No. 19 Marietta College, 84-65. The Student Princes used a 26-point effort from
Tre Watkins to move to 1-0 in the OAC. The victory was Heidelberg's first win over a ranked opponent since they beat then-No. 2 Mount Union on Dec. 3, 2022 -- almost one ago year to the day -- 82-70.
The Student Princes (4-2, 1-0) have won three straight against the perennial OAC powerhouse Pioneers (4-2, 0-1).
Setting a new career high, Watkins was 8-of-18 from the floor, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Isaiah Young added 19 points and a game-high six assists.
Eric Panning extended his season-long double-double streak to six, finishing with 14 points and 10 boards.
Heidelberg led by as many as 16 in the first half -- thanks in large part to Marietta's struggles from the floor. The Pioneers were a mere 6-of-33 (18.2%) in the opening 20 minutes -- but surged back and trailed by six with 1:29 left. HU managed to close the period on a 6-0 run to regain some swagger before halftime.
The Student Princes extended their lead to 17 (46-29) in the first four minutes of the second half before the battle-tested Pioneers roared back. The visitors went on an 11-0 run over a three minute span and trailed, 46-40.
HU regained control of the contest with a 9-0 spurt midway through the half. Later, deep 3-pointers from Watkins seemed to ice the game for Heidelberg, which led 68-48 with 7:09 left. The hosts maintained a comfortable lead, which ballooned to as many as 21, for the remainder of the game.
The Student Princes have taken three of their last four home games against Marietta. Prior to that, the Pioneers had won eight straight in Seiberling Gymnasium.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Heidelberg outshot Marietta in all aspects, including hitting 40% from beyond the arc and 81.8% at the line … HU edged Marietta on the glass, 52-49, but enjoyed a 23-11 edge in second chance points.
