The first set was all Heidelberg as the visitors took an early 4-1 advantage following a
Grace Porter kill. The Comets (6-18, 0-8 OAC) cut their deficit to one thanks to an error from the Student Princes.
With Heidelberg clinging to a 5-4 lead, they were looking to stretch their lead. They did just that, scoring the next four points and forcing the home team to take a timeout and stop the bleeding.
Later in the set, HU stretched the lead to 17-9 after a kill from
Natalie Chiles. The first set ended with senior
Cait Weirich serving three aces in a row to take the set 25-12.
The 'Berg continued their stellar play in the second set taking an early 5-2 lead after a service error from the Comets. The home team was not deterred and stormed back to tie the game 7-7.
Heidelberg, not phased by the comeback, scored the next four points thanks to a few errors from Capital and two 'Berg kills making it 11-7. HU continued their run in set two and finished off the Comets to take the 2-0 lead into set three.
In set three, the home team was determined to try and force another set. Capital held a 6-5 advantage early on and made it wider, taking the next seven points to put Heidelberg in a 13-6 hole. Down but not out, HU scored four of the next five points to cut Capital's lead to just four.
The Student Princes eventually tied it up 15-15 when
Lexi Evak hit it over the net off of a
Bridgette Burrus assist. But the Comets took back the lead after an HU error making it 21-17.
Looking for the sweep, the Student Princes did not back down. With the game slipping out of their hands, HU rattled off three straight points following two Capital miscues and an Evak kill to tie it 23-23.
Each team would trade points before Heidelberg put the game on ice as
Maddie Reed set up Evak for the game-winning kill. HU would take the final set 28-26.
Heidelberg will be back on the court Saturday as they travel to Wilmington College to take on the Quakers for their last conference match of the season. The match is set for 1 p.m.
