BEREA, Ohio – An off-balance 3-pointer by
Seth Hohman forced overtime, but the Heidelberg University men's basketball team fell in a thriller against the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets, 80-77. Hohman's triple capped a frantic final four minutes for the Student Princes who rallied from a 10-point deficit.
Sophomore
Isaiah Young, who sank 9-10 from the charity stripe, led all scorers with 23 points. While Young seemed to do it all for Heidelberg offensively,
Emmanuel Perdue and
Zane Leitwein had major contributions as well, adding 16 and 15 points respectively. Hohman was close behind with 14.
Heidelberg jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but BW responded with a methodical 14-2 run and led 16-9.
Trailing 26-15 with under seven to play in the first half, Young grabbed an offensive board and was fouled on the put-back. He drained both, then hit back-to-back jumpers. Triple-hits by Hohman and
Brady Bosma capped a 12-2 run that brought HU back to within one at 28-27.
Undaunted, Baldwin Wallace closed the half on a 10-2 run and headed to the locker room with a 38-29 lead.
Able to stave off HU's efforts to claw back into the contest, BW took a 71-61 lead on a 3-pointer by Anthony Mazzeo with 4:08 to play. From there, the Yellow Jackets would go 0-for-4 from the line and commit two turnovers. Heidelberg capitalized on the BW skid and battled back.
Following a Mazzeo miss, Hohman hit his heroic 3-pointer from the left wing off a feed from Young. BW's look at a regulation game-winner drew iron at the horn.
The extra five-minute period saw each team trading baskets early. Baldwin Wallace started with a huge block, containing the 'Berg offensive attack, keeping them largely on the perimeter.
The teams continued to trade baskets until the Yellow Jackets got one of their layups to go, giving them an 80–77 lead with just a minute to go in overtime.
Both sides stood pact on their respective defensive possessions, but an offensive rebound after a missed Baldwin Wallace 3-point attempt forced The Berg to foul. The Yellow Jackets missed the front end of a one and one, giving the Student Princes one last chance with six seconds left.
Isaiah Young got a look from the top of the arc, but the shot fell short, giving the Yellow Jackets the victory, 80-77.
Sitting at third in the conference, Heidelberg fell to 12-6, 7-4 OAC while Baldwin Wallace improved to 9-9, 5-6 OAC.
