NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University wrestling team neutralized a raucous crowd on the road, prevailing over Muskingum University, 40-10. The Student Princes picked up four forfeits and won at three contested weights to pick up their first conference win of the season.
Cole Renier lost an entertaining back-and-forth bout with Hunter Heck, 9-6. The win gave the Muskies their only lead of the day.
Fresh off a strong showing at the Spartan Mat Classic, 133-pounder
Brandon D'Egidio carried the momentum into his match with Elijah Burkhart. D'Edigio notched two first-period takedowns and appeared to be on the cusp of sticking Burkhart in the first. A mere 18 seconds into the second period, D'Edigio managed to pin his opponent -- giving HU a 6-3 lead.
Josh Gibson doubled Heidelberg's lead with a forfeit at 141.
Muskingum's Tanner Donathan picked up a 7-1 win over
Claude Buckmaster at 149.
Anthony Grecol,
Carson Mendoza-Pottenger, and
Jacob Horsch waltzed away with forfeits at 157, 165 and 174 -- giving HU an insurmountable 30-6 lead.
When wrestling resumed at 184,
TJ Rhamy used two takedowns to take a 4-1 lead into the second period against Isaac Sell. After extending his lead to 6-2 in the second, Rhamy escaped early in the third before adding a takedown. A riding-time point gave him a 10-2 major decision -- his 15th win of the season.
Noah DeHainaut returned the favor with a 10-2 major decision over HU's
Aidan Belgiorno.
Closing out the evening,
Gabriel Martinez put an exclamation mark on the win with a second-period pin of Josh Page. The 285-pounder carried a 4-1 lead into the second period and led 7-1 when he was able to turn Page onto his back.
The Student Princes return to action on Saturday at the OAC Duals. HU will face Wilmington, Otterbein and host Mount Union -- with action starting at noon.
