TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University men's basketball team snuck away with a win after a hard-fought and physical game against the Marietta Pioneers, 82-76. A perennial powerhouse, the Pioneers looked to halt a two-game skid -- but the Student Princes matched the intensity and came away with the win.
With the victory, Heidelberg improved to 12-3 overall and remained in a tie for first in the OAC at 7-1.
The Student Princes received contributions from a plethora of players, including 37 points from the bench. Reserve guard
Jashun Cobb had a team-high 16 points while
Emmanuel Perdue added 15. Freshman
Brady Bosma electrified the crowd with a career-high 13 points and four 3-pointers.
Both teams have shown throughout the season that they love to push the pace and it was very evident throughout the first half as they traded buckets. Cobb, a transfer, continued to be a catalyst for The Berg off the bench, quickly notching two slick assists to
Eric Panning.
Heidelberg struggled coming out of the gate only netting 23% of their attempts from deep. Bosma changed their fortunes, hitting the first 3-pointer of the game – eventually sinking four of the team's eight.
The Pioneers began to chip away at a Heidelberg 10-point deficit late in the first half and eventually took a brief one-point advantage five minutes into the second half. Bosma delivered from deep again, helping ignite a modest 6-1 run.
Just past the midway point of the frame, Marietta went up two on a layup by Frank Waganfeald and led 55-53. Undeterred,
Jacob Logsdon would turn the tide for Heidelberg and give them a boost of momentum with five quick points to give Heidelberg the lead back.
Logsdon's buckets started a 14-4 run -- punctuated by a knock-down triple from
Seth Hohman -- that put HU ahead 67-59 with 5:59 to play.
A huge alley-oop dunk from
Eric Panning off a feed from
Zane Leitwein gave the Tricolor a 72-65 lead with just three minutes to go. Though certainly not perfect from the line down the stretch, the Student Princes hit enough freebies to keep the Pioneers at bay.
Marietta was led by a 26-point performance from sharp-shooting Cooper Parrott, who drilled six 3-pointers.
HU's aggressive defensive game plan paid off, forcing 15 Pioneer turnovers and capitalizing on those opportunities with 16 points off of turnovers.
Panning finished with 10 rebounds and Cobb had a game-high six assists.
Heidelberg continues their home stand as they welcome Ohio Northern on Wednesday. Tipoff with the Polar Bears is slated for 7 p.m.
