Berg withstands Muskie surge

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team did just enough to eke past visiting Muskingum University on a rare Sunday matinee in Seiberling Gymnasium. A 13-0 'Berg run that straddled halftime was enough to lift the Student Princes to a 75-66 win over the Fighting Muskies.  

Eric Panning registered his fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Emmanuel Perdue scored a team-high 21 points, including a powerful dunk midway through the second half.  

Isaiah Young was the other 'Berg player to reach double figures with 12.  

After spotting Heidelberg 6-0 lead in the early going, Muskingum bounced back with a 12-0 run comprised of points from Alex Masinelli and Zachary Chatmon.  The Student Princes battled to stay close and trailed 30-25 with five minutes left in the half.  

Heidelberg took momentum back with an 8-0 run to close the half and led 35-32.  

The Student Princes secured control early in the second half, scoring the first five points on a a triple-hit by Perdue and a put-back by Zane Leitwein.  

With just under six minutes to play, Perdue electrified the crowd with a thunderous fast-break dunk that gave the Tricolor its largest lead of the game at 65-48  

Despite being short handed, the tenacious Muskies did not go quietly.  A 15-2 run brought the visitors back to within four with 1:56 left.  

Panning answered with a jumper on the next 'Berg possession, calming down the Student Princes. After the Panning bucket, HU would score their remaining six points from the foul line.  Over the final 90 seconds, Muskingum missed four 3-pointers. 

Heidelberg improved to 16-3 overall, 11-2 in the OAC.  The Muskies slipped to 5-16, 2-12.  

Masinelli, who entered the day as the OAC's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 23 points. 

Dylan Woods, who finished with eight points and four assists, now sits 12th all-time in assists (216 assists) and remains 19th in scoring (1,147 points).  

At 16-3, the Student Princes have kept pace with the 1983-84 team's record through 19 contests.  

Heidelberg travels to Capital on Wednesday -- a day later than originally scheduled.  Tipoff in Bexley is scheduled for 7 p.m.
