Berg fends off Quakers

WILMINGTON – Led by a 21-point performance by Emmanuel Perdue, the No. 19 Heidelberg University men's basketball team came away with a 90-73 victory over the host Wilmington Quakers.  Continuing their impressive play early in the year, the Student Princes stayed undefeated in the OAC conference action.

Perdue, one of four in double figures for The Berg, shot 7-for-11 from the floor with three 3-pointers.  Isaiah Young had 13 points and six assists.  Seth Hohman added 13 points of his own while Zane Leitwein added 11.

Back-and-forth early, the first half featured four lead changes.  It seemed that each time Heidelberg tried to separate themselves from the hosts, the Quakers had an answer -- and it was often in the form of a 3-pointer by sharp-shooting Collin Barker.  Barker was 6-for-7 from beyond the arc for the game.

Ahead 38-35 at half, Heidelberg opened with a 9-2 run which was punctuated by consecutive layups from Young.

Midway through the second, Amil Jenkins found Jacob Logsdon cutting down the baseline.  Logsdon seemed to surprise the entire gym by throwing down a thunderous contested dunk that gave HU an eight-point lead.  The jam kick-started a modest 7-0 'Berg run that pushed their lead to 13.

The Heidelberg lead hovered around 10 until the final 2:30 of the game.  The Student Princes closed on a 9-0 run.

Eric Panning had a game-high 11 rebounds as HU edged the Quakers on the glass, 43-36.

After losing their opener, Heidelberg has won seven straight and improved to 3-0 in the OAC.  The Quakers slipped to 3-5, 0-3.

Following a week off for final exams, the Student Princes will return to action next Saturday, Dec. 17. League play continues with a showdown with Muskingum at Seiberling Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
