TIFFIN -- Hosting their home opener in front of a frenzied Mustache Mania crowd, the Heidelberg University wrestling team fell to Ohio Northern University in a conference dual, 35-7.   The Student Princes picked up wins at two weights, and fell to 0-2 on the season. The Polar Bears improved to 10-0, 2-0 in the OAC.

ONU's Colin Mellott scored an early takedown against Cole Renier and led 3-0 after one.  Renier started on top in the second and nearly turned Mellott, but then yielded a reversal and four back points.  In search of bonus points in the third, Mellott picked up another reversal.  With a stalling point and a riding-time point, Mellott picked up a 13-0 major decision.

At 133, HU's Brandon D'Egidio picked up a take-down in the final milliseconds of the first period to take a 2-0 lead over Dylan Le.  Le chose down to start the second and grabbed four back points early in the period.  D'Egidio managed a takedown in the third, but lost, 8-5.

ONU picked up pins at 141, 149, and 157 taking a 25-0 match score lead into the hot dog eating contest at the intermission.  Football's Yvensky Gedna took top honors in the event.

At 165, ONU's Jordan Hardrick tallied three takedowns in the first two minutes of the match, taking a comfortable 6-3 lead over Carson Mendoza-Pottenger after one. Mendoza-Pottenger escaped early in the second and trailed 6-4 at the start of the third.  Hardrick held on for a 7-4 victory.

Heidelberg's Owen Frizzell countered an early ONU takedown with a reversal.  Tied 2-2 in the second, the 'Berg freshman tallied a takedown and two back points, then received a stalling point.  A quick reversal to start the third gave Frizzell a 9-2 lead.  With a riding time point in his pocket, Frizzell rode Jackson Hawker for the remainder, and won 10-2.

In his first match of the year, TJ Rhamy trailed Gavin Layman, 4-0, after two. As Rhamy, still shedding weight from football season, ran out of gas, Layman tacked on enough points for a major decision.

Wrestling up from his customary 184 pound class, Adam Medeiros had an early takedown at 197 to grab a lead.  ONU's Ajay Locke escaped to tie the match after two.  Medeiros registered a reversal early in the third and held on for a 5-3 victory.

At 285, Gabriel Martinez and Logan Painter were locked in a scoreless battle until the Polar Bear grabbed a takedown early in the second.  Martinez escaped and trailed 2-1 in the third.  In the final frame, Painter escaped and led 3-1.  Needing a takedown to even the score and get rid of a pending point for riding time, Martinez went on the offensive.  Though he did score a takedown, it came too late in the match.  Painter's riding time point proved to be the difference in a 4-3 win.
Heidelberg returns to the mats on Saturday at the Ohio Northern Invitational in Ada.
