Linhart Memorial Classic ends in a Berg win

Box Score TIFFIN – The inaugural Ron Linhart Memorial Classic concluded Saturday evening with the Student Princes bouncing back for an 89-64 win over the Olivet Comets.

Offensively, the game was a far cry from their Friday night loss against UW-Whitewater, in both energy and intensity. The Student Princes (1-1) looked extra spry and had a much better sense of urgency on both ends of the court, jumping out to a huge 22-4 lead early in the first half.  The surge was led by senior Seth Hohman who knocked down four of his six 3-point attempts early on.

The Olivet offense started slow but caught a rhythm midway and worked through their early turnover woes throughout the half.  Using a huge 21-11 run of their own, the visitors got to within eight.

The first half ended with a score of 47-29 after an Emmanuel Perdue step back 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

Olivet continued their momentum in the early part of the second half. Bolstered by forward Tevin Ali, he netted 12 of his eventual 16 points in the second half.

As it did in the first half, the Heidelberg lead got to as low as eight with a little less than 11 minutes to play. However, 'Berg senior Tre Watkins was on target when HU was desperate for some offense, drilling three 3-pointers midway through the second.

A three-point play by senior Amil Jenkins late in the second half kept The Berg's momentum going, as the lead eventually got back up to 21 late.

The Student Princes were led by the veteran tandem of Emmanuel Perdue and Seth Hohman, who each totaled 17 points. Watkins contributed 11 points himself.

The Comets were led by Ryan Robinette who tallied 18 points, followed by Ali with a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards, and Derrick Johnson with 12 points of his own.

After shooting 28.8% from long distance on Friday, HU hit on 15-of-32 3-point attempts (46.9%).  Conversely, the Comets were 3-of-15 (20%) from beyond the arc on Saturday after a school-record 20-for-45 (44.4%) on Friday.

Following the game, Perdue and Ali joined Pitt-Bradford's Nathan Schneider and Whitewater's Delvin and Miles Barnstable on the All-Tournament Team.

The Student Princes will be back in action on the road on November 16th, as they face off against the Bluffton Beavers. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
