ADA -- The No. 21 ranked Heidelberg University men's basketball team eked out a three-point win at rival Ohio Northern University on Wednesday night. The Student Princes let a 10-point second half lead slip away but regrouped in time to win, 74-71.
Heidelberg (12-2, 7-1 OAC) was led by a pair of double-doubles.
Eric Panning had 14 points and 10 rebounds while
Zane Leitwein finished with 10 and 10. It was the third double-double of the season for the 6-9 Panning and the first career double-double for the 6-2 Leitwein.
Dylan Woods had an 18-point night and
Emmanuel Perdue tallied 10 points.
The Student Princes led by as many as nine in the first half, but ONU rallied back to get back to with one with 2:41 left in the half. The Tricolor went on a 9-1 run to close the half, ignited by a 3-pointer from Leitwein, and capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from
Jacob Logsdon. The first came from the left corner, and the second came from the right wing just before the horn sounded. HU led 36-28 at halftime.
Woods hit a 3-pointer following an offensive board from Leitwein that gave HU a 48-38 lead with 15:37 to play. Ohio Northern (7-7, 1-6 OAC) caught fire, going on a 14-3 run over the next three minutes, taking a brief one-point lead.
But unlike Saturday's game at Marietta on Saturday -- a contest in which HU struggled to bounce back after a tough stretch -- The Berg answered the call.
Seth Hohman, who finished with nine points, hit a critical second-chance 3-pointer on the first possession after ONU took the lead.
To their credit, the Polar Bears did not allow Heidelberg to pull away. In fact, ONU would tie the game at 67 with a modest 5-0 run with under five minutes to play.
On a drive to the hoop,
Tre Watkins found Panning cutting through the paint. Panning took the feed and hammered it home with a dunk that put HU up 69-67.
The unflappable Student Princes remained cool during tense moments as the game neared its conclusion. After ONU got to within one on a floater by Ethan Bell with 32.7 seconds left, the Polar Bears picked up the defensive rebound after a missed one-and-one foul shot at the other end.
Quickly into the forecourt and looking to take the lead, ONU's Brandon Waugh drove into the lane. Leitwein shifted into defensive position and drew a charge. As the whistle blew, all five Student Princes on the court turned to the referee. As the official emphatically made the charge signal and pointed toward the other end, Woods, Panning, and Perdue exuberantly pumped their fists while Hohman vigorously yanked a joyous Leitwein off the parquet floor inside the ONU Sports Center.
On the inbound,
Isaiah Young -- who had a team-high five assists -- was fouled. With the resolve of an upperclassman, the freshman from Akron buried both. HU led, 74-71, with 61 to play. After each team took a timeout, Waugh's shot at a game-tying basket from the O in the ONU logo was off the mark.
Heidelberg outscored ONU, 25-11, in points off turnovers, and 13-2 in second chance points.
The Student Princes begin the second half of the OAC slate on Saturday. HU will host No. 17 Mount Union in the second half of a doubleheader. The women's game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. No attendance restrictions are in place, but all fans are reminded that Heidelberg's mask policy will be strictly enforced.
