TIFFIN, Ohio -- Back in Seiberling Gymnasium for the first time since the season opener, the Heidelberg University volleyball team took a three-set win over Hiram College on Tuesday. As usual, an energetic Hawaiian-themed crowd was on hand to cheer on the Student Princes, who picked up their fifth straight win over Hiram.
Heidelberg improved to 6-2 while Hiram fell to 7-3
Maddie Szawranskyj dominated the attack with 17 kills. Szawranskyj also recorded two aces and attacked at a .310 clip.
Sarah Oney and
Liana Petitti led the HU back line with 16 and 15 digs respectively. Petitti also scored 10 kills.
Kelsey Custenborder and
Julianna Pena controlled the offense with 16 sets each.
The Student Princes dominated the first set and cruised to a 25-18 win. HU had a 66% side out percentage in the set, their highest of the match.
The second stanza looked very similar to the first, with Heidelberg in control throughout the set and won 25-20. The Berg attacked at a match-high .273 clip.
Heidelberg appeared ready to cruise to a three-set sweep, leading 24-18. The Terriers ripped off six straight points to extend the match. Heidelberg, though, would regroup for the 26-24 win.
The Berg's win streak against Hiram extends back to 2015. HU improved to 26-4 all-time against the Terriers
The Student Princes will be back in action next weekend in the Wittenberg Fall Classic in Springfield, Ohio. Heidelberg will face Alma, Wittenberg and Rose-Hulman.
