TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's soccer team is victorious in Hoernemann Stadium. The Student Princes defeated Muskingum University 2-0 on a damp Senior Day.
Three Heidelberg seniors,
John Gall,
Kokai Minami and
Jacob Salogar were honored before kickoff as a part of senior day festivities.
The 'Berg was on the scoreboard early after a goal from
Christopher Flores in the seventh minute of play.
David Tchad sent
Jon Moore on a through ball up the left side of the field. Moore was founded just outside the penalty area resulting in a red card for the Muskingum defender. On the free kick, Flores blasted the ball to the upper-left corner of the goal, finding the back of the net.
It was not smooth sailing though, in the 30th minute, Mahfuz Yakubu put his head on a good ball played across the Berg goal. If not for a diving save by
Thomas Abraham, the Muskies would have been on the board and threatening for the win.
Heidelberg's second goal of the game came in the 88th minute from freshman
Noah Sharrit with an assist from Moore. Moore played a flick on to Sharrit who took a touch to control the ball and beat a defender in the process. Then with space and in a good position, Sharrit unleashed a left-footed shot that beat the Muskies goalkeeper to put the Student Princes up 2-0.
Heidelberg was out-shot 8-5 but recorded one more shot on goal (3-2) than Muskingum in the match. The Muskies also held the advantage in corner kicks 5-4.
The referee crew was kept busy with 33 fouls being called and four red cards issued.
Abraham recorded two saves on the afternoon.
The Student Princes conclude their 2020-21 season with a 1-8 record in OAC competition.
