Miller and Roth stay unbeaten

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University wrestling team wrapped up the regular season with a pair of duals hosted by the University of Mount Union.  The Student Princes lost to No. 6 Baldwin Wallace and No. 9 Mount Union, slipping to 1-4 on the season.  The meet was supposed to include a dual against nationally-ranked John Carroll, but the Blue Streaks were unable to field a full roster because of COVID-19 protocols.

The regular season ends without duals against Otterbein, Muskingum and the aforementioned Blue Streaks.

BALDWIN WALLACE - 39    HEIDELBERG - 6
The Yellow Jackets took charge early and coasted to victory -- a win which clinched the OAC championship.

After HU dropped the first five bouts, Devin Miller stepped up at 165 and earned a narrow 4-3 win over Dalton Leightner.  Leightner entered the match ranked fifth in the nation by D3Wrestle.com.

At 184, Dylan Roth stayed unbeaten with a 7-5 decision over Lucas Salmon.

In seven of their eight wins, BW picked up bonus points.

MOUNT UNION - 30    HEIDELBERG - 21
Down 20-0 after four weight classes, Carson Pottenger put HU on the board with a second period pin at 157.

The match of the day, potentially the season, came at 165.  Devin Miller looked to remain unbeaten, and faced Brailyn Lightner.  Lightner looked to avenge a loss to Miller last weekend.  Miller used an early takedown to take a 2-1 lead into the second period.  The only point in the second was an escape by Miller.  In the third, Lightner escaped with 50 seconds left and scored a takedown, taking a 4-3 lead.  Miller, who held a riding time point, was allowed to escape as Lightner was in desperation mode.  The Purple Raider freshman managed to score a takedown in the waning seconds to force overtime.  There, Miller won with a takedown 30 seconds into sudden victory.

At 174, Nolan Hatten won the third-straight bout for The Berg.  Like Pottenger, Hatten earned a pin in the second period, scoring six more points for the upset-minded Student Princes.

The momentum continued at 184, where Dylan Roth continued to do what Dylan Roth does...win.  Roth pinned his opponent in less than a minute, which put HU ahead 21-20.

The Purple Raiders would take the final two weights to win the match.

UP NEXT
Well, it's a little bit of a wait-and-see for the 'Berg wrestling program.  Last week, the NCAA announced that all of the winter Division III Championships have been canceled because not enough teams participated this season in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Conversations about planning alternative events are ongoing.  If details are finalized, BergAthletics.com will provide information.
