WILMINGTON, Ohio -- There's no better way to end the regular season than with a weekend sweep, and that's exactly what the Heidelberg University basketball team did on Saturday night. The Student Princes defeated Wilmington College 70-63 on Senior Night for the Quakers.
Heidelberg (9-2) has clinched the No. 2 seed in the OAC Tournament and will host Wilmington (3-9) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Originally a 10-team tournament, the OAC will move forward with an eight-team bracket because Baldwin Wallace and Capital have withdrawn because of COVID-19 protocols. Marietta (9-1) is the top seed.
Alex Arellano led the game with 20 points, owing to his consistent 3-point shooting down the stretch.
Emmanuel Perdue put up a strong showing with 15 points and six rebounds.
Dylan Woods scored 11 points and collected a team-high eight rebounds for the Student Princes.
While Wilmington took an early lead, the Student Princes created a 7-0 run to lead 9-5 with 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Quakers seemed set to redeem their previous night's loss. A 3-pointer from Andrew Clark tied the game at 11 five minutes into the contest. Wilmington then went on an 8-2 run to lead 16-13 with 13:01 remaining in the half.
A 6-0 run from The 'Berg brought the score to 19-16 1:30 later with a
Nate Staib 3-pointer to take the lead.
Wilmington then worked on a 15-6 run over the next five minutes and had amassed a 31-25 lead over the Student Princes with 5:49 remaining until halftime.
It took Heidelberg just three possessions and 1:28 to go on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 33. The Student Princes used five points from Woods and a 3-pointer from Taylor to make the run.
The Quakers held a slight advantage at halftime with a 37-35 lead going into the break.
Through the opening four minutes of the second half, Wilmington increased its lead to 45-35, the largest of the evening at that point.
The Student Princes rebounded with an 8-2 run, and closed the gap down to 47-43 with 13:13 remaining.
A 15-2 run from Heidelberg gave the Student Princes a 58-54 lead with 8:13 left on the clock. The run was bolstered by 3-point shooting -- with two from Arellano and one from Taylor.
Later, another Arellano 3-pointer kicked off a 9-2 run for Heidelberg, giving the Student Princes a 68-59 lead with 46 seconds left in the game.
Accurate free-throw shooting helped the Student Princes in the final minute as they took a 70-63 win in the final regular-season game of the 2020-21 season.
