TIFFIN, Ohio --
Alex Arellano is human -- but for a critical six-minute stretch in the second half, it didn't look like it. During that span, he amassed 14 points, two assists, a steal, and a rebound, which helped the No. 15 Heidelberg University men's basketball team turn a one-point deficit into a 16-point advantage.
Heidelberg avenged Friday's stunning loss at Ohio Northern by beating the Polar Bears on Saturday, 72-57.
The Student Princes improved to 7-2, while the Polar Bears record slipped to 3-4.
Arellano led all scorers with 21 points and collected four rebounds for Heidelberg.
Dylan Woods also had an impressive night scoring with 19 points.
Heidelberg trailed 37-33 at halftime and was still down by four points five minutes into the second half. Woods converted a three-point play, then made a fast-break layup off a block by
Emmanuel Perdue on the next ONU possession. With the Student Princes ahead for the first time since the 3:21 mark of the first half, both teams were unable to score for the next four minutes of action.
ONU retook the lead at 47-46 with 11:21 to play with a Grant Heileman layup out of a Polar Bear timeout.
Then Arellano stepped up. On the ensuing possession, he missed a 3-pointer from the left wing. After getting a steal on the defensive end, Arellano stepped into a nearly identical shot from the left side. This time, he buried it and put The Berg up for good, 49-47.
The 'Berg graduate student was just getting started.
ONU missed, Arellano drilled another 3-pointer.
ONU picked up two free throws, Arellano dialed up another from long range.
ONU grabbed a layup, then wisely double-teamed Arellano. Undaunted, Arellano found a wide open
Nakhi Taylor in the corner. Taylor canned the triple.
Perdue swiped the ball away, then hit a layup at the other end off a feed from -- you guessed it -- Arellano.
After another scoop and score by Perdue gave HU a 62-51 lead, Arellano hit his fourth 3-pointer in a row.
His final bucket of the run was a ho-hum turnaround jumper with a hand in his face. In all, Arellano's 14-point outburst came as part of a 26-6 run which turned a white-knuckle contest into a big win for Heidelberg.
The big run was critical for the Student Princes, who entered the game having lost two games in a row. For much of the game, HU appeared to play a bit tight. Arellano's six-minute span brought some much needed energy to the Tricolor.
The Student Princes led by as many as nine points midway through the first half, but the pesky Polar Bears grabbed momentum with a series of back-door layups and looks around the basket. The visitors methodically outscored HU 25-13 over the final nine minutes of the half.
Heidelberg's final three points of the period came in the closing moments. A BW traveling violation in the backcourt with 3.2 seconds left allowed HU to get an open look for Woods from the right corner. The senior sank the triple, giving HU a bit of momentum going into the locker room.
In addition to the big nights from Arellano and Woods, Perdue finished with 13 points and Taylor talled 11 points.
Seth Hohman added eight points as the starting five accounted for all 72 Heidelberg points. Similarly, ONU's starters scored 49 of the 57 Polar Bear points.
ONU registered 23 turnovers, which the Tricolor was able to convert into 31 points. HU had just eight turnovers.
Despite scoring 26 points in the paint, Heidelberg went to the line a mere four times. ONU had 21 attempts from the foul line.
Next up for the Student Princes will be a home-and-home weekend series with Wilmington College to close out the 2021 regular season. Heidelberg will host the Quakers on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
