TIFFIN -- In the series finale of the beloved NBC sitcom,
The Office, character Andy Bernard says to the camera, "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them."
Wednesday night in Seiberling Gymnasium will forever qualify as a good old day.
The Heidelberg University volleyball team stunned No. 14 Ohio Northern, rallying for a triumphant five-set win, 28-26, 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 16-14. With a raucous crowd pounding, chanting and stomping for all 122 minutes of action, the Student Princes handed ONU its first OAC loss and just its second overall.
Down 10-6 in the fifth set, Heidelberg stormed out of a timeout and took the next five points -- two of which came via blocks from both
Maddie Szawranskyj and
Sadie Estle. With HU up 11-10, the teams traded points all the way to 14-14. After an attack error by ONU set up match point,
Nicole Thomas sent a short serve. Scrambling to receive it, ONU sent the ball across the net where
Anamya Truex hammered it home for the game-winning kill.
The Truex blast set off a jubilant celebration for the team and their fans. Tears of joy filled the eyes of many while the team unleashed its customary "We are The Berg" victory huddle. After the repeated refrain had crescendoed to its peak, Szawranskyj and libero
Sarah Oney embraced for a heartfelt hug, having just knocked off rival ONU for the first time in their careers.
Szawranskyj had a game-high 22 kills on 56 swings. Estle contributed 14 kills and
Liana Petitti added 10.
Kelsey Custenborder finished with 28 assists while fellow setter
Julianna Pena tallied 23.
Defensively, Oney was unflappable. She had 37 digs and successfully received all 25 serves sent her way. Szawranskyj had 17 digs while Pena and Estle added 14 apiece. Thomas only recorded nine digs, but it seemed like each one was more acrobatic than the last.
At the net, Truex had seven total blocks and Custenborder had five.
After outlasting ONU in the first set, Heidelberg dropped the second and third. In the fourth, the Student Princes led by as many as 11 and cruised to a fourth-set win. HU led 6-5 in the fifth before the Polar Bears took four of the next five -- a run that set the table for the epic five-point rally.
Heidelberg's victory snapped a string of seven straight losses to Ohio Northern.
The Student Princes (16-7, 4-2 OAC) will look to carry their momentum on the road this weekend. HU visits Mount Union (18-5, 5-1) for a Saturday showdown in Alliance. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
