Box Score 2 WESTERVILLE – The Heidelberg University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday, falling to 22nd-ranked Otterbein University before sweeping Mount St. Joseph University to conclude the day. HU struggled in the opening match, falling 25-14, 25-15, 25-14 to the host Cardinals, but they were able to put that match behind them, topping the Lions 25-22, 25-17, 25-16 to end the day on a high note.
HU (15-7, 3-2 OAC) would earn an early 2-1 lead in the first set of the opening match after a kill by
Maddie Szawranskyj, but the Cardinals would rally off four straight points to make it 5-2 in favor of Otterbein. The Berg would battle back and forth for much of the set, but were unable to pull back even as they dropped the set 25-14.
A 3-0 start to the second set for Otterbein set the tone for the second set at they went on to take it 25-15 before Heidelberg struggled mightily early in the 3rd set, falling behind 15-1 before playing even the rest of the way, dropping the set 25-14 to conclude the match.
Anamya Truex and
Sadie Estle had six kills apiece to lead the Berg while
Sarah Oney (10 digs) and
Kelsey Custenborder (11 assists) registered team-highs as well.
In the second match of the day, Heidelberg opened with a hard-fought 25-22 win in the first set before getting separation in the second and third sets, winning 25-17, 25-16 to earn the victory.
Szawranskyj led the HU attack with 17 kills in the match as the Berg hit .226 in the win.
Julianna Pena dished out a team-high 17 assists while Oney led HU yet again with 21 digs.
The Student Princes return home on Wednesday for a match with 14th-ranked Ohio Northern. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM in Tiffin.
