Full Recap
Capital got off to a hot start with a 12-2 run in the opening 10 minutes of the contest. Undaunted, the Student Princes responded with a 12-0 run, taking the lead off a Hohman 3-pointer with 5:58 remaining in the half.
The Crusaders held a slight advantage heading into the half 24-22.
Just like the first half, Capital came out fast at the start of the second period. Over the first three minutes, the Crusaders outscored HU, 10-5 -- a run bolstered by two consecutive 3-pointers from the hosts.
Once again, the Student Princes responded under pressure with an 11-4 run. That surge levelled the score at 36, with Perdue and
Nate Staib leading the charge.
Trailing 45-43 with 8:32 to play, Heidelberg stormed ahead with a 13-4 run over a 3.5 minute span. Heidelberg led 56-49 with 4:55 remaining. That critical run was headlined by Hohman and Arellano, who contributed four points each.
The lead would prove insurmountable from Heidelberg as they carried it to a 65-60 victory, trading points with the Crusaders in the final four minutes of competition.
Three Takeaways
1. This was Heidelberg's first taste of the OAC's back-to-backs this season. Even without a very deep bench, the Student Princes had enough in the tank to win the contest down the stretch.
2. Capital played inspired basketball at the outset, but HU weathered the storm with a battle-tested roster
3. Both teams struggled to dial it up from long range. HU was 6-22 while Capital was 7-21.
Inside the Box Score
- With the win, Heidelberg swept the season series from the Crusaders for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign.
- The Student Princes managed 65 points with only five assists. The five helpers marked the fewest for HU since they only notched four in a 61-60 loss to Baldwin Wallace on Dec. 4, 2019.
- HU only mustered three offensive rebounds and five second chance points
