NEW CONCORD -- With a 78-69 victory on Saturday, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team swept the season series from Muskingum University. More importantly, the win clinched a spot in the OAC Tournament for the Student Princes. HU had four players in double figures.
Heidelberg improved to 10-11 overall, 8-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Muskingum fell to 8-13, 3-11.
Tamal Watkins and
Dylan Woods had 15 points apiece while
Emmanuel Perdue and
Martone Cole both contributed 14 points. Watkins added eight rebounds.
The Student Princes shot the ball well in New Concord, a gym in which they have traditionally struggled to win. The Tricolor was 28-for-57 (49.1 percent) from the floor, while Muskingum was 21-for-61 (34.4 percent).
Watkins was dialed in from the onset. The senior transfer scored Heidelberg's first seven points and helped his squad build a modest lead. Ahead 24-20 with four minutes left in the first, Heidelberg closed on a 10-4 run and led 34-24 at the break.
In the second half, the Muskies got to within three at 42-39 with 13:11 left. A jumper by Cole and a 3-pointer by Woods helped stave off the Muskingum threat.
Up by 15 with two minutes to play, Heidelberg sank 10-of-12 from the line over the final two minutes -- enough to counteract the desperation threes attempted by the Muskies. HU rolled to the nine-point win.
Heidelberg contained Muskingum's career scoring leader Marcus Dempsey to 30 points on 7-of-25 from the floor. Dempsey was a perfect 14-of-14 from the line. Alex Masinelli had 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The teams had identical stats in rebounds (37) and turnovers (13). But the big difference in the game was the shooting percentage.
With four games remaining in the regular season, Heidelberg sits fourth in the OAC.
The Student Princes return home to host Capital University (11-10, 7-7) on Wednesday. The game is slated for 7 p.m.
