Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Heidelberg handles No. 16 Marietta

HU enters tournament as No. 5 seed

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team concluded the regular season with an emotional 85-68 upset victory over No. 16 Marietta College.  On Senior Day, the Student Princes had five players finish in double figures -- including 16 points by Josh Dixon and 13 points from Tamal Watkins in their final home game.

The victory was Heidelberg's first win over Marietta at home since 2011.

With the win, Heidelberg (11-14, 9-9 OAC) will be the fifth seed in next week's Ohio Athletic Conference tournament.  HU and Capital finished 9-9 in the OAC and split their regular season matchups.  The Berg claims the tiebreaker because of their win over Mount Union.

The tournament tips off on Tuesday, with Heidelberg travelling to fourth-seeded Baldwin Wallace.  The men's game is slated for an 8 p.m. start, following the women's tournament game between BW and Otterbein.

Emmanuel Perdue had a team-high 17 points in his first start of the season.  Dylan Woods added 15 points and Curt Jacobs tallied 11 points.

Down 12-11, Tamal Watkins hit two free throws with 13:28 to play in the first half, giving HU a lead it would not relinquish for the rest of the contest.   Jacobs hit three 3-pointers in the opening half, igniting a raucous Seiberling Gymnasium crowd.

A late surge allowed the Student Princes to sprint into halftime up 13, 45-32.

The Pioneers (20-5, 14-4) took to the offensive early in the second half.  Marietta chopped the 'Berg lead down to two during the first eight minutes of the period.

Acrobatic contested layups by Dixon and Perdue pushed the lead back up to six before Dixon tallied a steal and a three-point play.  Moments later, Jacobs hit another tough layup.  Together, the four physical layups gave HU a 9-0 over a 106-second span -- giving HU a 63-52 cushion.  Marietta would not recover.

With each Heidelberg bucket and defensive stop, the home crowd erupted.  The result was a tournament-like atmosphere.

Despite having much of its front court on the bench in street clothes because of injury -- including seniors Prince Benson and Alex Arellano -- HU won the rebounding battle 33-32.

Marietta was led by a 19-point game by Lukas Isaly.  The Pioneers will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 seed Wilmington.

Because of the doubleheader on Tuesday, fans should be aware of the ticket prices.  Adults are $12, seniors (62+) are $8, non-OAC students are $5 and OAC students are free.  Regular season passes are not valid.
