Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sharp-shooting Student Princes surge past Quakers

TIFFIN -- With nearly the entire gym in foul trouble, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team used an excellent shooting night to upend Wilmington College, 89-73.  The Student Princes shot 54.9% from the floor in a game that featured a combined 47 fouls.

Heidelberg improved to 8-11 overall, 6-6 in the OAC.  With six games to play, The Berg is in a tie for fifth place in the conference.

Tamal Watkins and Dylan Woods both finished with 19 points, leading the Tricolor.  Woods was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Thrust into more prominent roles because team injuries, Logan West-Holmes and Bailey Croft performed well on the glass.  West-Holmes had a game-high nine boards while Croft added eight.  Both marks are career highs.

With his game-changing speed, Emmanuel Perdue had 11 points off the bench.  Heidelberg's bench outscored Wilmington's reserves 35-18.

Woods scored nine of his 19 points in the first five minutes of the game, helping Heidelberg open a 14-4 cushion.

Midway through the first half, Wilmington was able to close the gap to six at 20-14.  The Student Princes, though, went on a 16-2 run -- building up a 20 point lead.  HU led 46-27 at halftime.

The Quakers played inspired basketball at the onset of the second half, opening with a 10-0 run.  Watkins ended the run, putting back his own miss and putting the HU lead back into double-digits where it would remain for the duration of the game.

Despite giving up 19 second-chance points in the second half, the Student Princes managed to pad its lead to as many as 23.  Wilmington made one last valiant charge, cutting the deficit to 12 with three straight 3-pointers in a two-minute span late, but four free throws by Watkins thwarted the rally.  Heidelberg walked away with the 16-point win.

Wilmington pulled off a rare feat -- amassing more offensive rebounds (17) than defensive rebounds (16).  For the game, though, HU held a 45-33 edge in total rebounds.

The Quakers (7-12, 5-7) were led by a 20-point effort from DaeShawn Jackson.  Jackson was one of four visitors in double figures.

HU was 25-of-29 from the line (86.2%) while Wilmington was 15-of-25 (60%).

The Student Princes return to action Wednesday as they travel to John Carroll University (13-6, 6-6).  Tip-off in University Heights is slated for 7 p.m.
